Some examples on how questions should not be answered - from the recent final year IMU examination

1.

Examiner: So, your patient has diabetes. Ok. Tell me, what is your opinion about his diabetic control?
Student: Um. The patient is asymptomatic; therefore his diabetic control is good.

2.

Examiner: You said the abdominal wall shows guarding. What do you think is the reason?
Student: I think it is because of peritonitis
Examiner: Is the patient able to eat? Does she have vomiting?
Student: No vomiting. The patient is quite comfortable and eats normally.

3.

Examiner: What do you hear on auscultation of the chest?
Student: I hear a pansystolic murmur at the cardiac apex and the same murmur is also heard in the tricuspid area.
Examiner: What is the diagnosis?
Student: Ventricular septal defect.
Examiner: Why do you say so?
Student: Because the murmur is best heard at the cardiac apex.
